Christmas In The Village

image1

For more than twenty-five years Christmas in Smithville's Pioneer Village and Mishler Weaving Mill gave many families the chance to create their own special Christmas memories.  This year “Christmas in the Village” will be held on Saturday, December 7, 6 to 8:30 P.M. and on Sunday, December 8, 1:30 to 4 P.M.  Be on the lookout for St. Nicholas and Mrs. Claus whom will be in one of the buildings waiting for you take your family pictures with them.  This event is free to the public. On Saturday the Pioneer Village will open with Christmas Carols presented by the Dickens Singers sponsored by the Carpenter's Cup at 6 P.M.  As you travel through the village our craftsmen will be in their buildings and some will have treats for the children.  In the Sheller Log House, Dorothy Hodgdon will play the 1873 organ and her sons will play a variety of other instruments.  Their concert through the evening will reflect many of the carols our grandparents heard.  If it is a little chilly, warm yourself in the Blacksmith Shop as they make some items to help Saint Nicholas load his sled.  At the Sheller Log House with some hot cider or in the Irvin Pioneer Cabin roast marshmallows over the open fire.  Visit the Lydo Barn to see some of the tools used by our early farmers.  The Historic Church of God has hung greens to prepare for the holiday. As you travel around the Pioneer Village, visit the Children's Museum in the Caboose where you can view a display paying tribute to that lovable, melting “Frosty the Snowman.”  In the Depot our model train lay out will be in operation. The 1921 Kid Wagon will be traveling between the Village and the Mishler Weaving Mill, catch a ride and you will know how it felt to travel to school in 1921. At the Mishler Weaving Mill the ladies will be weaving rugs, dish towels and other items for the home.  Those items along with items from our craftsmen at the Pioneer Village are offered for sale in our Gift Shop.  Step next door and visit the Greater Akron Model-T Museum to see what they have added.  Visit the Heritage Center where there will be some old-fashion crafts to view and to make.  Make your own ornaments from materials provided. You can even make a toy for your dog. You can also visit the John Mishler Heritage room, Dan Mishler camera collection and the room with Smithville Schools history. On Sunday, December 8 from 1:30 to 4 P.M. you will to see if you can locate St. Nicholas and Mrs. Claus for your family pictures.  In the Sheller Log Home Lyla Smucker will be playing the 1873 organ, reminding us of the wonderful music of the season.  The Kid Wagon will once again be traveling between the Pioneer Village and the Mishler Weaving Mill, enjoy a fun ride.  At 3 P.M. the Orrville Community Band will present its annual Christmas Concert in the

Historic Church of God. The Officers and members of the Smithville Community Historical Society hope that all of our families will enjoy the wonderful Christmas and have a Happy New Year.
